chester ferry and Gillettes Castle

Across the river in Hadlyme is Gillette Castle. William Hooker Gillette was well known for his on-stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, and for constructing one of the most unusual castles in the country. You can get there by boat, drive over the East Haddam Bridge or take the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry with or without your car and then drive or hike up to the castle.

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat is the only steam train and riverboat connection in the country and is fun for both adults and children. The train leaves from Essex Station, and traverses the scenic towns of Deep River and Chester past pristine meadows, picturesque farms, a millpond with waterfall, and several bridges over rivers and creeks. Steam Train passengers who purchase tickets for the river boat ride disembark at Deep River Landing. Here, you board a riverboat for a relaxing and informative ride up the beautiful Connecticut River from Deep River to East Haddam.

goodspeed

The Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam was built in 1876 by William Goodspeed for his shipping and banking business and to provide a venue for his love of theatre. Over a century later, it is still be used as it was originally intended. The Victorian building overlooks the river, the East Haddam Swing Bridge, and a small riverside park suitable for picnics and walking.

The Connecticut River Museum in Essex is designed to appeal to children as well as adults. The family-friendly exhibits are filled with art and artifacts that link the River’s stories to our lives today. From dinosaurs to Dutch explorers, from Native American canoes to the first American submarine, there is something here to capture every visitor’s interest.
